[Custom Views](https://kb.kudurrustone.com/custom-views?hsLang=en) # Customizing an Edit Screen Layout ## The layout editor lets you decide what the Client Edit and Quote Edit screens look like.  You select which fields appear, what order they sit in, how wide each one is, and which fields are summarized in a read-only strip across the top of the record. It changes what you see, not what you are allowed to do, and a field you leave off a layout keeps whatever value it already had. ### Where This Is Done Open any client or quote for editing. In the toolbar at the top of the record there is a button labeled Layout followed by the name of the layout you are currently using, for example "Layout Standard". Clicking it opens a menu containing every layout available to you, plus New layout and Manage layouts at the bottom. ![](https://kb.kudurrustone.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Sep-02-2026-07-51-00-0658-PM.png?width=1232&height=73&name=image-png-Sep-02-2026-07-51-00-0658-PM.png) The menu is organized into three sections: - Set by your firm. Standard is always first. It is the built-in layout that shows every available field, and below it are any layouts a colleague has shared with you or set as the company default. - Yours. Layouts you created. If you have none, the section says so. - Start from a layout. Prebuilt layouts that ship with Kudurru Stone. Client Edit offers Essentials and Without QuickBooks. Quote Edit offers Essentials and Survey and parcel. A layout you may change shows **Edit**, which opens the layout editor. A layout you may not change shows **Make a copy**. It does not grant or remove access to anything, and it does not change any data. Leaving a field off a layout does not erase it. A short layout such as Essentials is safe to use on records that were created with a full layout. Setting a company default changes what everyone in your firm opens with, unless they have chosen a personal default of their own. Company defaults can only be set by an administrator, and setting one automatically shares that layout with everyone. Layouts are per screen. A layout built for the Client Edit page does not apply to Quote Edit page. ### How to Create and Customize a Layout 1. Open a client or quote, click the Layout button, and pick where to start. Use New layout in the footer to start from a copy of Standard, Make a copy on any existing layout, or Make a copy on one of the prebuilt layouts under Start from a layout. 2. Give the layout a name when prompted. The new layout is created and the screen reloads onto it. 3. Click the Layout button again and choose Edit on your new layout. The full-page editor opens under the heading Customize layout. 4. Add fields. The left pane, labeled Available Fields, lists every field not yet on the layout. Drag a row from that pane onto a group card, or click a group to select it, then click a field row and press Enter. Use the Filter fields box to narrow a long list. Fields arrive full width and one row tall. 5. Add a group if you need one. Use Add a group in the left pane or New group at the bottom of the canvas. Both do the same thing. New groups are created with the title New group. 6. Set widths. Each group card header carries six fraction buttons: 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4 and full. Click one, or drag the right edge of the card. A group's fraction is of the page. A field's fraction is of the group it sits in, and is set by dragging the field's right edge or by pressing Alt with the left and right arrow keys. 7. Set height where it applies. Fields that can be more than one row tall, such as notes boxes, show a small minus and plus stepper. Drag the bottom edge of the field to do the same thing. The maximum is 8 rows. 8. Fill the header strip if you want one. The Header strip runs across the top of the canvas and holds read-only summary cells that stay pinned to the top of the record. Drag a field onto the strip, or use the Select a field to add dropdown when the strip is empty. A field placed here stays available for the rest of the layout as well. Remove a cell with the x on its chip. 9. Remove what you do not want. Click a field and press Delete or Backspace, or drag it back to the Available Fields pane. Use the trash icon in a group header to delete the whole group, which sends its fields back to the left pane. 10. Reorder by dragging. A group moves by its grip, the bars icon at the left of its header. A field moves by dragging the field itself. A band shows where it will land. 11. Check your work. The top bar shows how many fields are placed out of the total available, and whether you have unsaved changes. Undo steps back one change at a time. Discard leaves the editor without saving. 12. Click Save layout. Click the Layout button and choose Manage layouts in the footer. The Manage layout views window opens. 2. Rename a layout with the pencil icon beside its name. You can only rename layouts you own. 3. Choose your own starting layout with the My default radio button. This works on any layout you can see, including one shared with you, and it affects nobody else. 4. Share a layout with the Shared checkbox. Only the owner can change this. Ticking Others can edit lets colleagues change the layout itself rather than just use it. 5. Set the company default with the Company default radio button. This is available to administrators only and it also shares the layout with everyone. 6. Delete a layout you own with the trash icon on its row, or with the trash icon on the same layout in the Layout menu. 7. Click Done. Your own default always wins over the company default. Clearing both returns you to the built-in Standard layout. ![](https://kb.kudurrustone.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Sep-02-2026-07-56-56-7576-PM.png?width=916&height=390&name=image-png-Sep-02-2026-07-56-56-7576-PM.png) ### Field Rules | Rule | Notes | | --- | --- | | Width stops | Only six fractions are allowed: 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4 and full. | | Group width | A group's fraction is measured against the page. | | Field width | A field's fraction is measured against the group holding it, not the page. | | Height | Height is counted in field rows, from 1 to 8, and only some controls support it. | | Arrival size | A field dropped onto a group always starts full width and one row tall. | | Group resize | Changing a group's width resets every field inside it to full width. | | Narrow screens | There is one layout. Narrower screens widen each fraction automatically. | | Leftover space | Space left at the end of a row stays empty and shows nothing on the record. | | Row breaks | Fields flow into rows automatically. You cannot force a row break. | ### Required Fields Cannot Be Removed Some fields are required by the record itself, for example the client name. They carry a padlock icon and the tooltip "Required by the record - it can be moved, but not removed". You can move them anywhere you like and change their width, but pressing Delete on one shows a message saying it has to stay on the layout. For the same reason a layout cannot be emptied. If every group ends up with no fields in it, Save layout is refused with the message "A view must contain at least one field." ### The Standard Layout Cannot Be Edited Standard is built into Kudurru Stone. It shows every field that is available, it cannot be deleted, and it cannot be changed. Its only action in the Layout menu is Make a copy. If you reach the editor without a layout selected you are sent back with the message "The Standard layout is built in and cannot be changed. Create a view first, then customize it." ### Fields Switched Off or Not Connected Some rows in the Available Fields pane are greyed out and cannot be dragged. There are two separate reasons and they carry different icons. - A ban icon with the caption "off for this company" means an administrator switched that field off for everyone in your firm. An administrator can switch it back on. - A plug icon means the field belongs to an integration that is not connected, for example QuickBooks. No administrator can change this from inside the layout editor. In both cases the field's stored value is kept. Nothing is deleted by a field being unavailable. ### Locked Field Order The QuickBooks card and the Audit Log card do not let you reorder or add fields. The QuickBooks sync owns the order of its fields, and the audit stamps are calculated values rather than fields you fill in. Both cards can still be moved around the page and resized. Attempting to click a field into one of these groups shows a message naming the group and asking you to select another one first. ### Tips - Start from a copy rather than from nothing. New layout copies the Standard layout, so your first job is removing what you do not need instead of finding everything you do. - Build a row by dropping fields in the order you want them and then setting each width. The drop decides order, the fraction decides width, and the fields flow into rows on their own. - Use the Filter fields box before hunting through the list. Field names repeat, for example City appears once for the address and once for QuickBooks, so check the small grey group name under each row. - The unsaved indicator in the top bar counts your changes. If it says "saved", there is nothing to lose by leaving. - If you want to go back to the old screen for one visit, use the "Use the classic page" link on the record.
